Superman #213
Will someone please help me?! I have no idea what’s going on! Talk about a learning curve. I must have slept through my Wednesday night Superman 101 course because I don’t have the faintest clue as to why anything that is happening is happening. Okay, Let’s break it down:

1. Supes goes to save Green Lantern from some aliens because Green Lantern really needs help (What? Isn't he like the only guy as unstoppable as Supes?). While he is gone something happens and tons of people, including Lois, vanish in an incident aptly named "the vanishing".

2. Supes goes to a random Middle Eastern war-torn country (hmmm, what country could that…nevermind) and finds the people who made the spherey-thing. The spherey-thing is responsible for the vanishing.

3. While in that part of the world, Supes encounters what, I think, is a new foe named Equis. He is pretty bad to the bone, but he is fighting Superman, so you know how it ends.

4. Superman takes the sphere away from the philosophical and rationalizing new leaders of the war-torn country.

5. Superman goes to speak with a priest who is the sort of pivot between the past and present, as the past is shown to us via Superman’s revealing it to the Padre.

6. There is a bad, bad man-general who is after the sphere, an ancient knife, Superman, the priest, and two mean dogs.

7. Superman fights with Wonder Woman over the idea of using the sphere on himself to go to wherever Lois and the rest of the missing people have gone.

8. Superman uses the device and ends up in a heaven-gone-wrong where his father is the Superman, Lois is a sort of queen, and there is no need to fight…No, no, no.

9. In this paradise wherein he meats his parents, Supes becomes aware that his father saved him as a baby, but realized that he could have saved more Kryptonians. Or, is it that his father should have saved more; or not saved him; or, since we discover that his father had the capability to create alternate dimensions, is it that his father made this heavenish place for criminals and then cleaned it up like NYC under Rudy Jouliani? But, no. We find out that Supes has, perhaps, invented this perfect place. But then Zod is there, and Equis too, and Equis kills Superman’s father by scratching his chest, or else just gloating at him until he collapses in a pool of bile, or yellow blood, or Equis’ urine. Now Zod is going to kill everyone in this place, which I am sure was the invention of one of the characters, and therefore less than real. Also, along these same lines is something about this having to do with Kal-El saving all of planet earth because it is destroyed, or it’s going to be, or that there is some connection between the death of our earth and the life of this new-old (Greek-old) place. Oh, and the general is holding Halcyon by the power of the two mean dogs, and demanding that when he hands her a knife she hand it back to him.

?

Anyone? Any takers? Hey, I love Brian Azzarello, and I really love Jim Lee (who’s art is nothing but perfection in these books) but where is all of this going, or better yet, where has it been, what’s happening?

I feel like nothing will ever make sense to me in Superman ever again. It will take like 200 issues just to really lay out there all that has happened in the last 5 or 6. I enjoy reading this storyline because it is exciting, action packed (except this issue), mysterious, and it looks great. But I think it has become too obscure, too mysterious. I cannot even imagine what will happen in the future because I don’t even know what happened in the past.
