Young Avengers #1 By Fumanchu |

Though Moulin Rouge is playing in the background as
I write, I will try not to break into song, but rather keep this review
bereft of music, as is my heart. Damn it! I said I’d try. Well,
this opening issue was a good read overall, although I sensed some subtle
awkwardness and ambiguity. Still, I have the feeling that this is going
to become an important series, at least for a time. Also, do not be fooled
by its simplistic-kid, superhero exterior, this comic contains a plot
twist that is as confusing as it is interesting, but I will say no more
on the matter.
The New Avengers are a team of teenage super guys that are obviously imitating the Avengers, but that name was actually given to them in an article by Kat Ferrell, a Daily Bugle reporter. Of course, the moderate and mild tempered Jameson wants MORE! MORE! MORE! So, it’s up to former Junior Avenger Jessica Jones to get what we professionals call “the scoop” on the new team of super dorks. (I mean, Iron Lad? What’s with the lad stuff? If you had immense powers, would you let anyone call you lad?) As the cover says, these Young Avengers are not what you think. What you probably think is that they are good at fighting crime, well they aren’t. It becomes quickly apparent that these new heroes are more inept than intrepid. Of course, the older heroes have to step in to keep them from getting in over their heads. Wait! I feel a prediction of Nostradamian proportions! Yes, I am receiving the sight! I predict… that the new team will face… strife, yes strife and trepidation… Their abilities will be doubted by their elders… They will have… rivalry, that’s it! And, they will put aside their differences to… save everyone and prove… that being young doesn’t mean you can’t be a hero! Now I know what you are thinking, that guy is a genius. You are right. I don’t know how I do it. It just comes to me. But whatever does happen, I am sure it will be a fun comic book in the months to come. So do yourself a favor and get it. I mean, it is a number one YOU FOOL! You utter egg-face! Be gone! Your non-first-issue-buying influence is clouding my vision. Wait! I’m getting something! Michael Turner's next comic… will feature a… young, buxom heroine! Yes, I am awesome! (Peblee, if you don’t like that last one, you may replace it with “I’m getting something! Batman’s enemies… are going to escape… yes, escape from Arkham! I am Awesome!”).
