is a series about Weapon X’s newest project, X-23. It seems that the
new team of nerds playing God has decided to attempt to clone their most
successful project, Wolverine, because we all know how well that went for
everyone involved. And if you don’t know, well let me just say lots
of people got stabbed, including the father of the head scientist-guy, Zander
Rice, who is well aware that it was Wolverine who killed his father. What
sinister plan has he hatched to achieve his revenge? That’s for Craig
Kyle and Christopher Yost (writers) to know, and for us to pay for monthly.
What immediately strikes any fan of Wolverine is the cover by Billy Tan (pencils). X-23’s pose and face are so much like Wolverines that it’s spooky. Just look at her grimace, she has her daddy’s rage. The inside art is also very nicely done. Tan has a style and arrangement that is dramatic and rarely feels crowded. What is more, his backgrounds are filled with thousands of tiny lines of detail that shows the amount of devotion he puts into his frames. My only complaint is that sometimes there is so much background that the frames can get a little too busy at times, and then the level of detail goes down. Don’t rush it Tan, you got mad skills! X-23 #1 is more like a novelette that a comic book, a very good novelette. Kyle and Yost’s story is very in-depth, and superbly presented so that, luckily, you don’t have to understand what the hell all the scientists are talking about to know what’s going on. Be warned, however. The story is just as cruel as it is good. The tension begins when head honcho, Sutter, replaces Dr. Rice with the lovely (and seemingly less evil) Dr. Kinney as head scientist on the project. However, the team runs into trouble when Wolverine’s Y-chromosome cannot be reconstructed. The answer? Replicate the X of course. And thus you have X-23; a female “twin” of Wolverine. In a bizarre twist, Dr. Kinney herself decides to carry the new weapon to term. It is apparent throughout the comic that there is more going on in this story than meets the eye. Who is the mysterious secretary in red that levels meaningful stares at everyone? Why is Zander trying to recreate the weapon that killed his father? How can Dr. Kinney bear a child just to turn it into a tool for the evil-bearded Sutter? I have no doubt that the answers to these questions will be well written - cold and heartless answers, filled with grief and angst. -Fumanchu |
