Wonder Woman

#213

This issue is action packed, a thrill, and moreover, a setup for countless issues to come. In this issue Wonder Woman must battle a Greek Champion to decide whether Athena or Zeus will hold the thrown of Olympus. Like most goings on of the Greek Pantheon, this struggle is asinine and completely based on hubris.

The great thing about the ongoing battle scene in this book is the intelligence that it reveals. Wonder Woman is vastly outmatched, and yet (obviously) overcomes her adversary through smarts, rather than super powers. This makes her more akin to Batman, more human, more realistic (despite the insanely unrealistic nature of the events of the book) and overall, more attractive, as the story is made both believable and fun.

I would like to say that the overtly Woman’s-Lib subject matter, and the plotting of the recently unseated male gods, seem a bit absurd, but they are integral to the setup, and therefore we can allow them to slide.

Rucka, who writes these and many other books, is excellent in seeing far, far into the future. He is able to plan out the fate of a particular character up to three years in advance. A guy with this sort of vision should be respected for his abilities, as well as his profound devotion to whichever character he is writing.

I should also include praises for the artist, James Iraiz, whose pencils are superb. The motion is beyond perfect, especially when a character like “Briareous” has a million moving heads and arms on his massive body. My only complaint has to do with the goddess, Palace. Her outfit is ridiculous. A "J. Crew" sweater and skirt while Zeus is fully equipped in his robe of old? Come on, now. This is plain silliness, and no amount of trendy, current, appealing-to-youngsters ideas will convince me that this is right. Besides, a robe would be hot and sexy. Can you imagine her in a toga. Wait, why does she have soccer-mom hair? This is the queen of Olympus for cryin out loud, not my son’s lit teacher.

Fix it.

Despite this minor annoyance, the book was fun, thrilling, and an easy recommendation for all of you who love DC. Buy it. You will not be sorry.
