Ultimates 2 #2 "Dead Man Walking"

Mark Millar is quite the writer, and in this tale he gets you a little wound up, lets you take a deep breath, and then spits on you – the scoffing spit of one who knows what you cannot (by which I mean, the rest of the story).

Tony has an awesome suit and is helping some familiar Euro-heroes. Remember the leak, the one that got Bruce Banner all choked up last time? Well, it seems that the president (we’re going to make a wild guess, and assume that his name isn’t the name of Mark Millar’s candidate) is really upset right now with Nick Fury and the team of heroes in his charge. Nick, played by Samuel L Jackson, is worried that he is going to lose his job; convinced that Thor ratted them out; and firm in his commitment to see that Bruce Banner gets the chair. And at the end we wonder, is Jackson up to something…naughty?

Thor is a complete nutter in everybody’s estimation, save for the multitude of dirty, slavering teens and twenty-somethings who love him so. Cap (who, by the way, knows how to make an appearance) has a politically charged debate with Thor resulting in a Vietnam War-era display of affection. All of this serves to bring us back to the fact that Loki has escaped from Midgard, which of course spells trouble (or just Midgard, depending on how you look at it.)

Lastly, I must mention Professor Xavier. The scenes with him and Banner are awesome, and lead to a scary, scary, poop-yourself view of what is (hopefully) to come.

Before going on to conclusions and predictions I should pause to say that the colors, (Laura Martin) more than the pencils or inks, make the art in these books outstanding. Martin's ability to display light, be it under water, Manhattan at night, the colored glows and shadows of a night-club, or just lightning is amazing. Really, the lightning is powerful and perfect.

Now back to the silly banter. What does the future hold? Probably not the death of the Hulk by the will of the people. And, it is most unlikely that Giant Man is gone for good. No. Folks, I smell a breakout – a breakout of Hulkish proportions. I predict that Banner gets away with the help of Ant-Man (who happily was not actually eaten in issue #1); a fight between everyone and Loki; and perhaps an Oscar for Sam Jackson.

Note: Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch are weird together. They were weird in 1602, and they are weirder now. Is there something I need to know about?
