Space Ghost #5
Space Ghost is a friggin phenomenon. This NOT the Space Ghost who, when talking with Beck on TV continually interrupted the songwriter’s monologues with “I got two turntables, and my mommy’s home.” This is an ass-kickin Space Ghost with an axe to grind. By axe, I mean a guy named Temple, and a few million of Zorak’s minions, and by grind, I mean blast into oblivion.

I was surprised when I read this book for the first time. The first thing that shocked me was the artwork. With amazing art by Ariel Ollivetti, and covers by Olivetti and sometimes, Alex Ross, you will be stunned at the brilliance of this comic. Each page is bright, but so in depth, textured, and surreal. I was blown away by the time and focus that must go into each issue.

Honestly, I expected my surprise to end there, but I was wrong, and I mean Fumanchu wrong. The story was the ultimate shocker. Like the art, Joe Kelly’s story is full of depth, emotion, and an excellent plot. There is a sense of real danger, hope, anger, and fear all thanks to the combination of expert storytelling and chemistry between writer and artist. The most well thought out element, at least for my taste, is the Borg-like quality of the bugs. Zorak is their leader, and should he die some other mantis will become Zorak. I also love the opposing drives of the men and the bugs. The bugs are driven to conquer and to feed without thought or care of pain, death, and suffering. They have pride and logic, but are selfless despite their gloating. Their concern is for the collective. The men are concerned for themselves, their own lives, their own emotions. They too have pride, but too often emotion blocks out logic, and so they seem the weaker intellect. Thus, Space Ghost must take on the horde in hopes of saving……………..just kidding. Space Ghost’s aim is to kill Temple, bugs, anything that stands in his way. He is a hero, but only out of necessity.

The complex character development and perfect art make this a series to be remembered. Let’s hope that after next issue, when it dies, the Space Ghost crew will return like another Zorak to suck our wallets dry.
