Runaways
Volume 2 #1 |
|
Looks like teen-time at the Hose O’Marvel. With
books from Arana to Young Avengers Marvel keeps heapin’ on angst,
rebellion, and confusion. Of all of the new or relatively new teen-related
comics out there the absolute best is Runaways.
Volume one of this series was an excellent ride through LA, the inner workings of evil syndicate “The Pride,” and one which saw an overload of character development between the children of the syndicate’s members. Replete with narrow escapes and plot twists, volume one was an excellent series. In this first issue of volume two, the stage is set for all kinds of madness. It is overstuffed with new-old characters, humor, and an ending you will not be able to read only once. Honestly this ending is like looking at the primordial soup one month prior to creation – there’s going to be one heck of an explosion. What’s more, this is not an elseworlds book, so what you see and hear are things applicable to the entire Marvel U. These things are grit your teeth, and shake your fists style prophesies put into play as a sort of last-minute heads-up. I would give it away, but then I would be the meanest, no-good trickster on the block. It’s too good, too bad, and too sad. I’ll just say this: This new setup must be a slap in the face to everyone else in the biz – a slap which leaves the welted impression of Brian K. Vaughan - a hand far better at writing than your own. The art by Adrian Alphona is flowing, dreamish, and downright memorable. Unfortunately
this book got caught in that trendiest of trends (I personally blame Image
and the "1st issue = collectors item" craze of the early 90’s).
Of course I am referring to the short go, ending, and instant restart
for no reason. Often these books start over at number one with the exact
same team of writers and artists that were there at its ending. Also,
as is the case here, the story is not a new one, but simply a continuation
from the last one of the previous volume. This is starting to become offensive,
yet still I buy ‘em just like everyone else.
