Runaways
Volume Two #1 |
Ho,
Ho, man. If you thought that the original Runaways series was good, you
were right. But if you thought that the new Runaways series was going
to be even better, you must be some kinda genius, because it is. So focus
your super smart brain on my words for a moment and I’ll give you
the run down, even though you’ve probably already foreseen it.
The Runaways are a group of super teens that operate out of L.A., far from the super villain saturated New York City. Now if your wondering why there were never many super baddies out of the west coast, it’s because of the Runaways’ respective parents. They formed a super villain group known as the Pride which killed or maimed any other empowered bad guys that messed with there turf, but they were finally defeated by their own children. The Runaways then set up HQ in the Pride’s cozy, abandoned lair. What the Runaways didn’t expect, however, is that without their parents ruthless tactics, L.A. now has an influx of Super Villains reeking havoc. Good times. Now that you know the premise, let’s check out issue #1. The first thing your eyeballs should notice is the super cool cover by Jo Chen. Having done this, you may now open the book. (If you don’t have this comic, you probably won’t ever have it, or at least you won’t pay cover price. So I suggest you hurry up and grab one before it’s too late and your forced to buy multiple issues of Black Panther #1, which should be going for about 12 cents right about now, to fill the void in your soul that your procrastination has created). In any case, the drawing on the inside by Adrian Alphona (penciler) Craig Yeung (inker) is well done, if not great. What is great about it is the ability of Alphona to capture emotions and expressions, show realistic and fluid movement, and the characters are unique and well thought out (especially the clothes). In
Runaways #1 writer Brian K. Vaughan sets up what seems to be a serious
plot line in which the streets of L.A. are being overrun by an influx
of new super villains. The Runaways seem hard pressed but are up to the
challenge, but just when they are getting settled into their new way of
life, the plot takes a sharp turn into apacalypse-vill. I won’t
say anymore except for this: things were looking rocky for the Runaways,
but now they are the only ones who can stop the eventual death of every
super hero on the planet. Sounds simple huh? Do yourself a favor, stop
stockpiling Black Panther and Lara Croft back issues and get a comic that
will be worth something someday. |
