Powers #9

(Icon)

Despite its throw-back art and heavy focus on the melodrama which is the life of Detective Deena Pilgrim, this story delivers the goods from start to finish. With heretofore well developed characters, and an unmistakable plot/setup (it’s only been done a million times – kinda like our website) Powers proves that it is better than the rest by being raw, full of surprises, and just plain good. NOTE: when I say “raw” I don’t want you Sam and Twitch fans to give up your comic – this is not disgusting, but rather it simply shows the human emotional/physical aspect of investigators in a way that is so believable, you will be wondering if this is an excerpt from the files at your neighborhood precinct.

The art in Powers, done by Michael Avon Oeming, is reminiscent of the art by Bruce Timm; which, concerning Batman: The Animated Series was called “Art Deco” due to its heavy emphasis on the Film Noir aspect which was the founding of the concept and character of both Gotham, and the Dark Knight, himself, and flew in the face, like powers, of modern art, style, and presentation. Timm is a master of this genre, and he delivers the goods in a way that is pleasing to the eye while detracting from the weight and seriousness which somehow emanates from a book which is seemingly about far-fetched circumstances.

The company, Icon, which was established by writer Bendis and David Mack of Kabuki (who I recently had the privilege of meeting) is probably the best company on the market today. Though it has only two titles, the fact that they are both substantial gives it a 100% quality rating. This is, of course, something about which almost no company can boast. What’s more, the founders, at least David Mack, are very approachable and friendly, willing to discuss their work, life, and the biz without a hint of annoyance.

This issue of powers is excellent. Filled with art that delivers a mystery of depressing, and downright, awesome proportions, this book is a must read for all of you who are out for a good book, rather than cutting-edge art. Be warned, little ones, this is an adult piece of pulp, which while lacking in sexual nature, it makes up for it in the verbal. It is my recommendation that you all check it out.
