Phoenix: Endsong #2
Ahh… Let me tell you something, dear reader. It is but once in a while that a series comes along as amazing as this one. So, if you are like me, you otta jump all over this one like it’s going out of style because it is. Or at least, it is going out of print. Phoenix Endsong is a five-part mini series in which a starship, manned by some unknown, tattooed guys, attempts to destroy the Phoenix. They fail, however, and the injured spirit returns to Earth to find its old host Jean Grey. But it has come in a state that is unstable and seems bent on destroying Scott Summers (Cyclops). I, for one, would be okay with that, as it would free up the lovely Ms. Emma Frost. But that is neither here nor there. If you would like to know more about issue #1, get it! Or check out my review of Phoenix Endsong #1 on the site.

Now, some of you may say to you screens, “But I don’t know anything about the Phoenix or the X-Men!” But I won’t be able to hear you. Still, there is no reason to worry, because Greg Pak (writer) wouldn’t let you down like that. The series requires no prior reading. So even if you are an X-Men newbie, you can still pick up this awesome comic. It is definitely worth it. Between Pak’s incredible story and the phenomenal art by Greg Land (penciler), Matt Ryan (inker), and Justin Ponsor (colorist), this series is sure to be a desired one in years to come. At any rate, it will go down in Near Mint Minus history as one of the best for its believable dialogue, addictive story, amazing art, and beautiful coloring. In fact, could someone get Justin Ponsor’s name on the cover? I think he might be the most talented person working on the comic, and that is saying a lot.

Phoenix Endsong #2 begins just where #1 left off, with Scott and Emma arguing… In bed. Scott almost has Emma convinced that last nights strange incidents and his current thoughts about his previous wife were only caused by a dream when Logan (Wolverine), always the bearer of cheerful news, declares that Jean is in fact back. Those of you, who know about the Phoenix, know that this is bad. Last time the Phoenix inhabited Jean Grey’s body, some 5 billion people died. So the X-men immediately begin their efforts to find and kill their former second in command, again, with Emma Frost at the helm harboring mixed feelings and mixed purposes. And just as Beast attempts to build a chamber capable of containing the Phoenix, he discovers that they have more problems than they thought. Quinton Quire, an Omega mutant (whatever that means) has been released from his stasis only to find that the girl he fell in love with is dead. Wielding the ability to stop everyone in Xavier’s school simultaneously and some other unknown powers involving lots of green light, he goes in search of Sophie. I don’t know what his guy is all about, but I have the feeling that it’s bad news.

If you are trying to start a comic collection, or are a big fan of the X-men, or perhaps enjoy beautiful and well written comic books, or if you aren’t a stinkin’, losery, social outcast of Grub Mole proportions, then I must, as an officer and a gentleman, beseech you to do yourself a favor and get the Phoenix Endsong Limited Series. It is only 5 issues long! But don’t panic! There is still time to save yourself from a life of regret and mediocrity! Go now and get issue number one and two before your arch rival scoops them up and chortles in your ashamed face. After all, you deserve to be the chortler, not the chortlee.
