New Avengers #4

I thought this book was going straight to Lameville on the Express Train O’Lame, but I was wrong. I was also wrong when I suspected that no super-group comic book could be truly humorous. Bendis is perfect. He is able to harness the serious with the hilarious, and he can also make Spidey funny without it sounding like he is a complaining, whiny, little snot-nosed Spider-Brat. (Hopefully no anime drawing, American Idol watching, sissy-pants will read this and decide that the idea of Spider-Brat is a brilliant way to make a buck, and then turn it into a real title - only they would no doubt call it Spyda-Brizzy, or Araqno-Brizzat. If I ever see that title out there, I’m through.)

Bendis, from whence comes this talent? This is well written, comical comic goodness. The art, by Finch, Miki, and D’Armata, is superb. And, I should also give a shout out to the producer, Omar Otieku, because, for once, the excellent work of the colorist (D’Armata) is fully recognized through the official placement of his name on the cover along with the other talent.

Brilliantly, Bendis is going to make us sweat over the undercover, illicit, double-agent goings on of Spider-Girl. No note on that development in this issue. We do, however, learn why Electro busted all those villains out of prison, who the main release was, and that the Avengers, like us here at NMM, also thought that Sentinel looked like Thor. I think that someone is reading our reviews.

Is that you Bendis? Caught ya, didn’t I?

Lastly, and finally, we discover why Wolverine is not on the cover of this book – namely because he is actually in it. Should he not have been in the book, he would have been on the cover, but putting Wolverine somewhere on or in a book is all you need to have to sell it, right?

That was mean-spirited. Really, Logan’s appearance in this book is very well done, if not strange and questionable. I am now officially excited about this title, and have high hopes for its future. Wow, didn’t expect me to say that, huh? Me neither. HMMM.
