Megactiy909 #5

Ever want some more comics of the futuristic, sci-fi, horror, supernatural, techno-thriller, drama genre? You didn’t know that was a genre? Well it is, and yes, you want more of it. With that settled, let me inform you that Megacity 909 is the comic for you. Mega City is like most other comics in that it was made by a talented team of creators that have one syllable in their last names. (Kang, Suh, Dabb, and Lee, which may be the first Lee ever to make a comic.) Somewhere in the strange and squishy brains of Kano Kang and Zack Suh (creators) lies this bizarre future of massive black cities powered by innumerable cables, pipes, and alternate fuel sources. In this noir Mega City, the anguish of a partially mind- altered society comes back to kill and destroy in the form of pulses. Pulses are demon-like creatures that possess humans and have a strange control over their surroundings. Megacity 909 is about a team of specialists called PHOBIA, which deals exclusively with pulses.

Jacob Lee and Andre Dabb have written an interesting and detailed story with a setting that while distant, is not unbelievable. Though it suffers from the occasional cheesy one-liner, Lee’s and Dabb’s work is still very fun to read and hints at some truly neat-o developments to come. The artwork in these comics is none too shabby either. Artists Kano Kang and Zack Suh, besides having identical names as the creators, have combined some amazing drawing skills with the best coloring that technology has to offer. The result is the beautiful yet disturbing images that fill these comics and fill me with love for their supple feminine characters… But I’m getting off track. Oh, and big props to Kang and Suh for their spectacular cover art.

In the earlier issues, PHOBIA was sent in to the recently half-destroyed INZEN building because of the large number of pulses that were freed in the blast. Their mission was to set off a small nuclear devise and destroy the rest of the builbing. What they don’t know is that it was destroyed on purpose in an effort to kill the spirit of one Kusanagi. Kusanagi, a victim of foul play, has somehow gotten into the system for a little bit of techno-terrorist-type revenge. The blast failed however, and Kusanagi greets PHOBIA with an army of twisted, crazy, death machines. To make matters worse, most of the team is teleported to a strange parallel dimension in which pulses are normal, and they are monsters. After a fight with the dimension's grotesque defenders, the team is confronted by a being, which seems to be a montage of evil pagan gods (lucky for them). As if things couldn’t get worse, Hoek picks this wonderful time to discover that the pulse which destroyed his life is still hanging around in some corner of his soul, and that it is some sort of king!

Mega City #5 shows the fight between the evil master of the strange universe and the evil pulse-possessing Hoek. So… really the PHOBIA members lose either way. Meanwhile PHOBIA agent Jaeminae is stuck back in the INZEN building and is trying to complete their original mission with only an out of shape INZEN executive Jerome to help her. As the comic ends, things are looking up for Jaeminae and very weird and bad for the remaining team members in crazy town.
