Manhunter #8 |
Like Breach, Manhunter is expanding the DCU with excellerated outward momentum. This is "rockin good news" in the face of the events of Identity Crisis and its ramifications, which are also expanding the DCU, but in a more inward way. Here we see Kate Spencer donning a uniform out of inward necessity, beating on the baddies, and playing the hero, while losing her son, marriage, and potentially her law career. But hell, if Murdock can do it… Also, like unto Breach, her actions have garnered the attention of the JLA. Of course, for now, the League is more concerned with taking down the shadowy fiend who killed Firestorm, but Manhunter is impossible for them to ignore. (Weather they know that Kate and Manhunter are the same confused hero or not remains to be seen.) So, what can you say about this book? It is entertaining, smartly written, and downright fun. The art, too, is great, expressive, and to the point. There is no artsy feel to these comics, but nor is there a feel that DC heaped too much talent on an overly simple story. This is concrete, fluid, and mechanical. It is a hit, so far a slight sleeper, but a hit waiting to happen. One thing is for sure, Andreyko and his team of artists have got their hands on a winner. The fact that she exists in the DCU means that it’ll get the chance to breathe long enogh to prove itself as a success, or a failure, rather than being cancelled immediately based on lackluster sales, or waning interest. I look for this book to reach deep into the vast subject matter of the DCU, and to do so with class, style, and a growing and undeniable fan base. Cheers to the team, and to Andreyko. Keep the battered, driven, and mean spirited, bespandexed heroine of potential Batman proportions. Lose a few of the overtly campy smart-ass lines. Continue with the rough action and sexy drive. And, soon you will find yourself with a permanent career based on a most necessary character: a 21st Century female savage with the smarts to back up her attitude. -Peblee |
