Batman: Legends of The Dark Knight #187

"Riddle Me That" part three

Listen all! If you want to see Bats get jacked-up big time - and I mean knock-down, break your ear-horn thing off, ruin your best outfit, and clinging to a nosy reporter for your very life jacked-up – then you gotta check out what McCarthy (writer), Castillo (pencils), and Ramos (inks) have done to Bats in this issue.

There’s the explosion, tricky watches, and the uncovering of a scandalous relationship. There is also some very clever word-smithing and gadgetry harnessed by Nigma. What is more, we get a shadowy glance back in time at the fun-loving, self-esteem enhancing, and all-around pleasant (okay, it’s really bleak, dark, sad and scary) relationship between Nigma and his old man.

There are hints of past puzzles and puzzles to come. There is a mysterious relic of ancient times which will no doubt lead to a diabolical and chaotic mess. This mess is apparently going to have to be cleaned up by the ever-trusty, but very handicapped Bat-o-vac. There is also a mysterious, lumbering, Grundy-esque voyeur tied to the recent Riddler make-over who is not at all happy with Nigma, and seems to be green with the inability to shower and shave, no…no, I mean envy.

The Riddler is such a complicated character to begin with, but he is often times viewed as weak and not at all intimidating. This is no longer the case. When you throw in such an awful distant-past, a more-devious recent-past, and the calm, measured insanity that is his present, he gets so complex that he becomes downright unknowable. One thing is for sure: Batman has a real problem on his hands; one which isn’t going away to Arkham without a long, troublesome fight.

Once again, I must mention the frames. They are incredible. Each page is like looking at a garden through a window. Each picture seems to grow out of these frames so naturally, that it is hard to believe Mr. Castillo isn't fighting off monstrosities manufactured of green hundred-dollar bills. Big pat on the back to Castillo and Ramos!

Whether you like Bats for action, mystery, or story-lines including: dubious relationships, problematic riddles, and various mishaps of the hellish kind, you will love reading and viewing the work by this team on Legends. I give it a rating of Kick-@$$!
