Legion of Superheroes is the greatest nod to the Comic Industry’s past that I have ever seen. Here we have an old set of characters, which personally I am not familiar with, revived with a story and art that cannot be beat. The style of the characters, most apparent in the hair-styles, is an old one – that of the 70’s, and is superbly placed in modern visionary backgrounds inhabited by other bad hair throw-backs. The alien races are also excellent in appearance, though less dated as the main characters.

This issue focuses on to primary storylines – the more interesting than you would ever think melancholy history and entertaining, even comical, goings on of “Triplet Girl’” and the whisperings coup against the Legion’s leader, Cosmic Boy, lead by Brainiac. And, let me tell you that the story is amazing. Even when the focus is given entirely to the social life of Triplet Girl, you cannot help but be drawn in. This comic has me stumped. There is no action, and no real mystery; yet here is a perfect book which reads like a novel, rather than a superhero book.

The story by Mark Waid (also appearing in The Darkman’s review of Hunter Killer) and Barry Kitson is a story for the ages. I have to admit that since I don’t know the old series, I cannot say whether or not, like Conan, this book is focusing on a simple retelling of the original series. What I do know is that as far as storyline, dialogue, and baiting setup, this is as good as comics can get. This story will have you hooked, if not from issue one, then from issue two for sure.

The most impressive concept behind Legion of Superheroes is that Waid takes the time to introduce and overriding Inter-Galactic conspiracy, while fully, and I mean he leaves out only that which is necessary to keep you wanting more, developing each character in what is by no means a small group.

This is one of the most underrated and impressive books that I have encountered in the last year. I cannot stress the necessity to read this book. For you story fans out there, this will be a series which is not quickly or easily forgotten. For you long-time art fans, this book will satisfy beyond comprehension. The onlt group which will probably be left out of the love for this series is those who love very modern art, i.e. Turner, Silvestry, Lee (any of them, except Stan, etc.). This book will most likely disappoint these fans, who are ignorant in their lack of appreciation for expert writing. Enjoy these books. These is comics at their best.
