Peblee: Fumanchu! What
did you think about the "New Avengers"?
Fumanchu: I thought it was pretty good. I was kind of skeptical of it the because the cover was so full of rippling, highly-reflective muscles, and pursed-lipped man-grimaces. But when I opened it up I was pleasantly surprised. Peblee: I felt betrayed, a bit, by the artist [David Finch] because when I first saw Matt Murdock I was sure it was Ultimate X-Men’s Cyclops. The only difference is the hair. Fumanchu: Well, that’s because it happens to be the same artist. Peblee: Yeah, it’s David Finch who is an excellent artist. Although, the intro page [page one with brief synopsis of “Avengers Disassembled”] was either drawn by Matt Murdock, or else Finch did it in three minutes with his eyes closed. Fumanchu: Yeah, I did think that some of the art seemed a bit rushed, as well as some of the writing. Did you like the exchange where Cyclops’ doppelganger is revealed as Matt Murdock, and is talking with Spider-Woman, who says, “…and I just want to say, Mr. Murdock, I think it absolutely sucks…that the press outed you as Dare Devil.” To which the red-lensed man replies, “Yes, considering it isn’t true.” Peblee: Right, so he’s not Dare Devil. Fumanchu: Well I wasn’t sure, but then, towards the middle he repeated the line “…I’m not Dare Devil”. So, I guess he really isn't Dare Devil. Peblee: Well, let’s go to the plot. You got Electro being paid by some nare-do-well in the shadows to cause a distraction for an unknown reason. Then he becomes more powerful than he’s ever been. Fumanchu: Actually, he becomes powerful enough to blow apart a facility which houses super villains who were apparently unable to do the same. Peblee: Yeah, super villains; some of which are even more powerful than Electro. Fumanchu: Obviously he is now more powerful than all of them put together. Peblee: If Electro is as powerful as we see here; he is either going to become a really big-time heavy hitter in the Marvel U... Fumanchu: Or a really big time plot-hole in the Marvel U. Peblee: If he’s that powerful, then why is Spider-Man still alive? Maybe spiders don’t conduct electricity. Fumanchu: Yeah, why doesn’t he blow the Triskelion to hell? Peblee: Now, Captain America looks awesome. Let’s talk looks: We already talked about Matt Murdock (Cyclops), weird. Spider-Man looks awesome – the motion is perfect in these frames. Spider woman is mildly attractive. But, why are the prisoners who are forced to wear prison garb still allowed to wear their masks? And why does Sentry still have his massive heavy-weight-wrestling-championship belt on, instead of the prison outfit? I mean, did you see that thing? It goes from his neither-regions to his nipples? Also, Finch has drawn the coolest version of Carnage I have ever seen. Fumanchu: Why is it that all those villains ran to the sight of the explosion to hold a meeting with Electro instead of just escaping? Peblee: Because they fear nothing! Fumanchu: Obviously. Kind of like Dare Devil, who I don’t guess was in this issue. Peblee: No he wasn’t. Cyclops explicitly said so. And what do you think about Ultimate Thor...or Sentry, who was in the cell at the end of issue #1 going by the alias of Robert Reynolds (a very non-Nordic name)? Fumanchu: I think Matt Murdock just went to the wrong cell and thought he was talking to Sentry. Peblee: No, he is actually Sentry. He just looks a whole heck of a lot like Ultimate Thor. Peblee: Well, let’s talk about Ultimates 2 shall we? What did you think? Fumanchu: It was really sweet. The writing is much better in Ultimates 2 than in New Avengers. Much better thought-out, and less rushed. Except, I don’t understand Captain America’s indignation over the press calling the Wasp an adulteress while she and Cap are committing adultery. And I believe that Dare Devil must have been in this one since no one said that he wasn’t. Peblee: Do you have your Ultimates 2 with you? Fumanchu: Yeah Peblee: I want you to do something for me. Go to the last page. Don’t look at it! Put your hand underneath it. Now, go back 6 pages, you should be looking at the first Ultimate appearance of the character just killed in Avengers. Of course I am talking about the all-powerful Ant-Man, replete with shrinking/insect communication helmet. He is a scientist. So, don’t question it... Fumanchu: Yeah. That kinda bugged me. Peblee: (Laughs hard) Fumanchu: How is any ant-riding super hero going to stop any super villain, except, possibly, Picnic-Man? Peblee: (Laughs harder) … I don’t know. He can tell them to really bite you though, which could hurt. You ever been bitten by one of those fire-ants, the red ones? … Now back to my request. I need you to follow me here: I want you to hold some pages with your hand. Go back to the last page. Again, don’t look at it. Put your fingers underneath it. Now, look back at that original Ant-Man page. See how he’s flying up by Bruce Banners face in the last three frames of that page? I know there is glass between them, but suspend disbelief, and follow my train of thought here. Now, turn to the last page….Did Bruce just eat him? Fumanchu: (laughs) Peblee: He ate him! Marvel has just killed Ant-Man twice in, like, two months. Fumanchu: Yeah. I love that Bruce Banner looks like Stephen King. Peblee: I love his sandwich! It looks so good, except that it has an ant in it. Fumanchu: I love Ant-Man’s tight ant-ridin’. Peblee: He looks like he’s ridin’ ant rodeo there. Fumanchu: And why is that ant a wasp? Peblee: It’s a flying ant. Fumanchu: It’s a wasp. Peblee: You’re a wasp... Oh, I know why it’s a wasp. He’s ridin’ a wasp because Cap is riding the Wasp. It’s perfect. You’re right, it is a wasp. Peblee: Well the last thing I want to say is that it is strange that Wolverine is on the cover of New Avengers #1. I mean, he’s not anywhere in the books. And who is that robot, numchuk-wielding guy? Fumanchu: It must be that Ultimate Cyclops guy because I’m sure he isn’t Dare Devil.
