Hellboy Makoma |
“Or, A Tale Told By a Mummy in the New York City Explorers Club on August 16, 1993” It is no secret that Mike Mignola is a great story teller, but my favorite Mignola stories are those written old folk tales. Makoma is the story of an ancient African hero’s journey to defeat the menacing giants that plagued mankind and save the world. This story has a very old and mystical feel to it with a little bit of modern Hellboy thrown in. It really gives such a sense of surreal awe and alien ancientness that you could almost believe that it is an ancient, African legend. Plus, add on a hilarious, Mignola style, ironic ending and you have yourself quite a comic book. This is the kind of story that any person should enjoy, not just comic fans and much less only Hellboy fans. The one problem I had was that the story was so good, that the common and modern interruption that is Hellboy’s dialogue detracts from it a little bit. Still, this is a great mini series, even if I am still no closer to understanding the nature of Hellboy for having read it. -Fumanchu |
