District X #10 |
Boring! Don’t get me wrong, this story arc about the underground-extra-mutant-types living in NYC is an incredible and excellent story arc filled with invention, creativity, and all around god writing. But this issue just goes nowhere. It was mind-numbing in the face of the last nine issues which have been some of the best comics I have read lately, or for that matter, ever. This issue sees Izzy progressively getting worse, and displays the continued breakdown of his home life, the beginning of his dereliction of duty at work, drug dependency/abuse, and his continued pursuit of other women; but these things are not shown sneakily or mysteriously, but just as common misbehaviors of an overstressed cop who tries to do right, but finds himself frustrated and confused. As for action, there is none until the last one or two pages, and it is lame. In my opinion, it diminishes the powers/image of Bishop and belittles his character which is already lowered in status just by virtue of him working basically as a cop. There is a meeting with the Melek character, leader of all the right-deprived, yet happily neglectful, and most likely non tax-paying tunnel dwellers, but the meeting is so uneventful as to simply frustrate the reader. This is not the sort of frustration that drives the reader to pursue the next issue, but rather the type that makes you want to cry because such a great series has issued such a poor installment. If you have read my previous reviews, then you know that I love District X, and that it may be my favorite book other than Conan. So you can imagine how crestfallen I was to read issue 10 and end up feeling like it showed and told me nothing. It was a bore, and quite frankly it is the weakest issue to date. I sincerely hope that next month’s issue shows a return to the District X that I have grown to love. The potential of this series out weighs its value immensely. But, when you consider the lower readership of the book, you have to point out that should the team at District X continue to flop this drivel in our laps, we will lose the book to cancellation. The only hook this issue inserted was the last few pages, which were entirely predictable, and lacked the momentum and horror that they were desperately trying to create. Come on guys! You were top of the class before this one. Don’t let it go to your head, just produce a great book, and we can all snuggle back into heinous fear, misunderstanding, mystery, and a most original storyline and concept like the good ol’ last 9 issues. I’m counting on you. |
