Detective
Comics #804 |
The fourth part in the “City of Crime” series, this episode sees the showdown between the out of his gourd Mr. Freeze, and the very subtle, violent, and ever on the move Batman. This recent storyline, though for some reason pre-“War Games”, is excellent. Its heavy involvement with day to day people in bad, harsh, or true-to-life circumstances make it realistic, enthralling, and believable. My most beloved aspect of this story lies in the fact that the mastermind behind the current evil dealings, the Penguin, is not present at every crime committed by his lackeys. Also there is the fact that he has no sort of masterminded evil genius type plan for Gotham domination, but rather is just caught up in some nasty, don’t talk about it at the dinner table with your mom style misdeeds. The Penguin is not a good fellow, and his designs in the last four issues show him to be the most uncouth nare-do-well plaguing Gotham’s inhabitants. As the cover suggests, this issue focuses on the coo-coo mentality of Mr. Freeze, a man who can rationalize anything because he lives entirely in his own ongoing fantasy – a fantasy which involves his killing of everyone in the world for the right reasons, and his inside a meat locker marriage to a drastically under aged and incredibly frightened young lady, by a kidnapped priest, and witnessed by an audience of the dead. Ah, weddings, magical moments, aren’t they? Naturally the Batman is there to mess things up, and yet someone else is also at foot. This unknown has put Bats into an unpredictable and therefore comfortable situation. Thus, the issue ends. We know nothing much, and Batman knows less. Naturally, it will all be easily repaired, solved, and cleaned up by Bats and his old pal, Robin. It will just take a few more issues. Want to hear a theory? It’s the cop. SHHHHH! Don’t tell anyone, it is not inside info, just a guess from a guy that’s read a few comics. |
