Conan #14

Well, I have said it before, but I must repeat myself. Conan is the best comic running, and it is definitely one of the best ever. Conan is an icon in the nerding community; it’s true. But this comic goes far beyond a familiar character. I think that the true brilliance of Conan is the way that the writing and art come together. Kurt Busiek’s writing would be enough to make this a spectacular comic. The narration is just superb. While at the same time, the art of Cary Nord, Thomas Yeates, and Tom Mandrake could also make for an excellent comic (regardless of the writer) with their gritty, well lined style. The art in Conan is simply some of the best I have ever laid eyeballs upon, and Dave Stewart's somber coloring and masterful shading play no small part in that. My point is that the various parts of the comic’s production are top notch, with the best aspect being how well it all fits together. It is obvious that these guys are really concerned and dedicated to tying this comic together.

That being said, let’s talk about the issue. In Conan #14, Kalanthes, priest of Ibis, has hired Conan and Janissa, a testosterone plagued killer-lady who is also the slave of a weird old witch known as “The Bone Lady, and they are all three trying to fight their way into Hanumar. Though sadly, they are fighting through the crazed citizens that once were friends of Kalnthes. Meanwhile, a massive tentacled monster sent by Thoth-Amon, servant of the evil god Set, is giving chase. So, the odds aren’t in their favor. I think that the theme of Conan is a simple - strong man versus a world of magic, monsters and human - plot. This is especially evident in this issue, as Conan finds himself between warring gods and their powerful servants.

I especially liked the part when Conan realizes he was tricked into playing the part of medium for an ancient god, and shoves Janessa in his place. Conan then faces a war between deities with only his sword and that infamous swarthy grin. I won’t tell you how it all goes down, but rest assured that Conan returns once again to his wanderings, tied to no man or god.

Now comes the part when I would usually tell you how stupid you are if you don’t have this comic. But, I have come to realize that just because you don’t like what I like, shouldn’t make me think less of you. I should just feel very sorry for you. You stupid jerk.
