Breach #1 "Savior or Destroyer?"
|
The personal creation
of Bob Harras (writer/contributing editor to numerous titles) and Marcos
Martin (BatGirl:Year One) Breach is an original story which follows the
standard becoming-a-hero lines. After surviving an accident of Cold War
proportions, and sleeping quietly for about 20 years, Rip Van Breach (Major
Tim Zanetti) wakes up with fear, anger, and confusion, instead of a really
great beard. The book begins in 2005, but flashes back to the makings
of this character. As the story title "Savior or Destroyer?"
properly puts it, we don't know yet if Breach will use his powers to beat
up bad guys, or put some nuclear fisticuffs down on Bruce and Clark. One
thing is for sure, the tiny glimpse that we get of his capabilities lets
you know that he will have to be a major player. Think Green Lantern mixed
with Captain America (a demotion from Major, but promotion in popularity)
throw in a dash of Powder, and you have yourself a delicious piping-hot
Breach.
The art in this book is simple, in a nostalgic
sort of way. Martin's (pencils) can really amaze with his classic style
which is a rarity among the cell-shaded, cartoonish books of today. Lopez
(inker) is amazing, and considering the simple pencils in this book, should
be given a ride on the shoulders of the rest of the crew. The origin of
Breach was believable and pertinent, and the story solidified personal
relationships, displayed rounded personalities, and slapped me right in
the face with one of the meanest, coldest double, no, tripple-crosses
that I have ever read. One thing is for sure, Harras knows about pain.
So what lies in store for Major Breach? Hopefully a dump-truck full of revenge, and then maybe a stint with the JLA; or perhaps a Masters degree, and then the JLA: (a masters degree in revenge.) No matter what happens, DC has a new big-shot, so how about a hearty welcome to Breachy (careful not to shake hands,) and a big "Good on ya!" to Harras, Martin, and Lopez. Keep it up. |
