B.P.R.D. The Dead #3 |
B.P.R.D.
stands for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Created by
Mike Mignola (creator/writer) as the setting for the Hellboy series, the
Bureau quickly gained a life and story of it’s own as it accumulated
a number of strange yet intrepid members (hapless weirdoes). Currently,
Hellboy is AWOL on a quest to learn more about himself, and because he
is fed up with the bureaucratic a-holes that run the B.P.R.D. So, it is
up to the other members to beat back the groping arms of the preternatural
from the tasty snacks they know as “humans.”
In Mignola’s newest installment, Liz Sherman (troubled pyrokinetic), Johann Kraus (bodiless medium), and Roger (childlike homunculus) are trying to stop a spreading force of blood draining frog monsters, which are the spawn/minions of some large and evil creatures, which lie in limbo in a dimension very close to ours. The team is also given a new boss, Benjamin Daimio, who is an okay guy despite being a little rough around the edges, has a horrific scar, and was once dead for three days. In the meantime, Abe Sapien (a fish-guy with a mysterious origin) is currently tracking down a lead about his past. The artwork is done by Guy Davis; whose style is in the same vein as Mignola's, but is very distinct. Heavily lined and sometimes a bit sketchy, Davis’s art is nonetheless very good and wonderfully detailed. The corpses are superbly grisly and the frog-monster’s flesh-altars are disgustingly well drawn. Also, it is obvious that he puts a lot of effort into his characters' expressions, which I think are great. B.P.R.D. The Dead #3 begins with Daimio questioning Dr. Gunter Eiss who was found in the Bureau’s new HQ in Colorado. They then learn that the facility was made for some Nazi scientists that came over to the U.S. after WWII. They tried to continue some unknown experiment when a disaster killed everyone but Eiss, and left him trapped down there for 50-some odd years. So now, in the midst of the war with the frog-monsters, a new mystery unfolds as the team tries to figure out exactly what experiments where going on. Meanwhile, Abe is entranced by the ghost of a young lady from his past. It is unknown whether Abe was truly this girls husband once, or whether the husband had a hand in making Abe. In any case, specters ensnaring people’s minds is rarely a good thing. If you are a fan of Mignola, then I demand you get this series. If you are new to Mignola, this is a good place to start. |
