Amazing Fantasy #7

For those of you who don’t know, Amazing Fantasy is a comic that works as a sort of “pilot” for comics. Marvel exposes these new characters in Amazing Fantasy before sending them off to their own series. #7 possesses an extremely cool cover and is about a girl with a poisonous arm called the "Scorpion" - The girl is, not the arm. But this is not ordinary poison. It is more of a poison power that can affect people long distance and can be fatal up close. The Scorpion is actually an old character that has been revamped by writer Fred Van Lente. The story, while a bit campy, is interesting enough. Though I did have a big problem with SHIELD just sending the Scorpion off after her mother, potentially risking A.I.M. (terrorist organization) becoming aware of SHIELDS interference because the Scorpion has had no training and is getting almost no help from SHIELD. Still, this may actually be a purposeful plot by SHIELD to use her as bait or for some other means. The art inside is not as good as the cover, but is still good with a modern style.

The Scorpion’s story, like most superheros', begins in tragedy when she accidentally kills her boyfriend with her strange power and then is runs away from her home and adopted parents. To make matters sadder, she returns as a derelict, punk rocker who expresses the distance she always felt between herself and her foster parents who were recently murdered. Luckily, SHIELD shows up before her evil, real mother can kidnap her.

This one is going to be a hit or miss. It could end up becoming a good series, but I’m not promising anything. Still, it is a lot better and less cheesy than many of the comics like it which are coming out these days. I guess we will just wait and see, but I think I’m going to keep updating you on this story to see where it goes. So stay tuned.
