Action Comics #823

Action #823 is a great read. Be warned, though! You must also read Action Comics #822 in order to feel truly satisfied with this book! The thing is, there is a new fella running around picking at the Super-guys. This time it seems like the boys are up against an unstoppable foe; however, a clever reader will observe the use of the term seems above. Of course this book has never been called “Repo Man in Action Comics” and I have to tell you, it probably never will. But you should check it out all the same. It is a truly fun read.

Repo Man, which was a sort of underground 80’s cult-film, starring Harry Dean Stanton, has little or nothing to do with this new character. The Repo Man in this comic is more akin to the Hulk meets Dale from “King of the Hill.” But this monstrosity of way-back, home-grown, big-country proportions does put up a good fight the end of which contains a mystery: How do all these rapid-muscular-growth guys manage to keep some remnant of their clothes attached to their recoculously enormous figures?

But wait. There is also a more pressing mystery. This hillbilly Bruce Banner is bearing a token of power that he could never be able to come by naturally. He also mentions a “white-haired old guy” by which he can only mean: 1. Father Time; 2. Old Man River; or 3. one of the guys from ZZ Top. But which is it? And why do they want to kill Superman? Furthermore, why didn’t they give these awesome abilities to a guy with a little more brains and a little less social-class anxiety disorder? Perhaps we’ll never know.

What we do know from this issue is that Martian Manhunter is now suffering at the hands of Preus, and that Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olson, is about to be next. Listen. If you like reading comic books, you will not be disappointed by the show put on by Chuck Austen (writer) and Ivan Reis (pencils). These guys know how to do a great book. And, by the way, Reis’ artwork is excellent. In fact, Reis has got to be up there with Jim Lee. All of his stuff is exceptional (except I don't really like the massive neck-broader-than-head thing). Some one please give this man a promotion. Where was Reis when DC decided to do "Superman: Strength"? Honestly, there is no excuse for the art in that book's interior.
