Shanna The She-Devil #2
Ahhhhhhh, Shanna the She-Devil. What a great book. Trust me brothers and sisters, I am not just saying that because of Frank Cho’s excellent artwork which displays before us a classic character reborn in her most sexy form. Rather, I say that because of Frank Cho’s excellent artwork which displays before us a classic character reborn in her most sexy form combined with Frank Cho’s incredible ability to write a plot that splays out before us (naughty reader) intrigue, dissention, and impending disaster.

This book shows the good Doctor and the remaining soldiers surviving on the remote island in Jamestownish fort. Being surrounded by ever encroaching predatory Dinosaurs, the group is often saved by the lovely, but brutal Shanna. The doctor is proud of her progress in learning English and adjusting to the damned strictures of clothing (why? Please tell me, someone, why?), much to the disappointment of the men in the camp. The German scientist lady, who seems to have become a soccer-mom, is seemingly a threat which is allowed to roam freely. She is constantly remarking about Shanna’s progress as a weapon, while keeping quiet about the Nazi lab, the project which created the floating beauties (see review of issue 1 in the review archives), and the presence of prehistoric monstrosities. In his own expert way, Cho will use the German’s comments to lead the reader astray, causing he or she (okay, he) to think about future conspiracies, eminent danger, and single minded evil. This is done so well, but shattered later, leaving the reader whimpering under the embarrassment of Cho’s proverbial wedgie-technique. The real trouble will apparently come from amongst the ranks of slavering soldiers who want to both get it on with Shanna, and put a bullet in her head because they fear she might destroy them at any given second.

The art in this book is excellent, although I do wish Shanna could refrain from wearing overalls, which I can’t figure out how she came by anyway. There are more suggestive scenes in this book than were present in the last, but all is still done tastefully.

On a side note, I think Frank Cho really likes the concept of the fiercely removed eyeball.

Once again Frank Cho has produced an excellent comic which is both entertaining and done well beyond the standards of the majority of today’s books. I have to give credit once more to the colorist, Dave Stewart. The clean, bright colors are superbly done, and deserve a round of applause.
