Seven Soldiers of Victory

Wow.
Only Grant Morrison can take a story that seems totally washed-up after
the very cool intro, and turn it into an incredibly cool storyline based
on Z-level heroes and turn it into a should be smash-hit that breaks the
rules of today’s comics. There are no tiny, waistless women, there
is a Western theme, and there is even a swamp that is spooky while possessing
no vine, mud, and anger based protagonist.
What is very weird is the progression – how the book just gets better and better. Beginning with a mysterious encounter and ending with one of Apocalyptic proportions, this book will leave you reeling with the depth of imagination and produced creativity packed into every character, every scene, and every bit of the dialogue. The art by JH Williams III is gritty and excellent. His character consistency is perfect. The motion of the art is excellent. I actually even went back a third time to this book, looked through it, and realized that except for the beginning and end scenes involving the 7 mysterious men, the rest of the book could have been done without words. That is how well Morrison and Williams III mold. The major benefit is that Morrison’s story is like icing on the cake – it just makes the whole package sweeter. My favorite part about this book is the debased and seedy nature, or at least feel, of all the characters involved. It makes the story come alive, gives it an identifiable pulse that we can all read. These are not Superman clones, but rather sort of Constantines. They are base sort pf characters, all of which are totally different and original except that they have a desperate nature that binds them and is their common thread. They are would-bes and has-beens whose disparate destinies bring them together to form a team that somehow gels. This
book is important to fans of the DCU because it is the foundation, created
by Grant Morrison, on which numerous titles will be built. In the near
future, titles include: Shining Knight, and The Guardian. It will be intriguing
to see where our master of the sub-standard hero takes these soon to be
books. I for one will be there, any given Wednesday. |
