Wolverine #28

After acting as the Dawn of the White Light’s number one hit man, Wolverine is now their number one enemy. I like this storyline very much, but I must say that I enjoyed the first half (issues 20-25) much more than I am enjoying the current arc. Nonetheless, in the history of Wolverine writing, or more accurately, my own reading of Wolverine, the greatest writer to pen Logan’s misadventures is Mark Millar. He has taken this character and the entire gallery of X-Men associated characters and crafted a vast storyline full of action and drama.

This issue, though in comparison uneventful and lacking in any history lessons except for the one regarding the Sentinels, was no doubt essential to the storyline and reasonably good. The art seemed better, or else I am just resigning myself to the fact that John Romita Jr. is never going to take the time to be great, making this book stand out as a beacon of outstanding art in the long succession of hurried sketches that has been the last eight issues.

In this episode Logan goes up against the legendary skills of Northstar. Never heard of him? Come on, didn’t you read that best seller, Alpha Flight? No, well don’t worry, me neither. In fact, until Wolverine killed him in the woods outside of Xavier’s school, I don’t recall ever seeing Northstar. But, let me tell you he gets punched by Wolverine. That’s right punched…once.

The best part of this episode was the somehow undetected appearance of the 500 foot tall Sentinels who smashed the mutants holding Wolverine captive. The worst part of the comic was seeing Wolverine ride away on the shoulder of a Sentinel like Atrayu on the furry bumbling back of the dog-dragon, Falcore.

I guess I must recommend this issue, as it is pertinent to the rest in the story arc, but let me say, be ready to be unimpressed.
