Ultimate X-Men #64 |
Anyone ever heard of Brian K Vaughan? Ultimate X-Men is actually quite similar to my life, if everyone was just a little flabbier, and lacked all powers, including social, verbal, and mathematic skills. See, the Ultimate U promised to be edgy and full of back-alley deals with editors which would allow for a development similar, though differing from the evolution of the original Marvel Universe. That is very true indeed when you consider the origin of the Fantastic Four, the worldliness and skepticism which are unimaginably rampant in the Ultimates, and the Deaths and discoveries in Ultimate X-Men. There is also the grossly pubescent nature of Ultimate Spider-Man, and the Ultimate failure of Ultimate Electra, and the Ultimate slowness of Kubert’s Ultimate Iron Man, which is the only good book of the last three mentioned. Ultimate X-Men is really a great book. It is filled with discovery, which is probably the reason that I like it so much. The story telling is not, at least in my mind, the best in the business, but it is very fun for me to see this group change expand and grow. If I read Uncanny, there is so much history that is nearly unknowable to someone my age that works and has a family, or at least works and has a family which he enjoys. This is a book you can recommend to anyone, and after 3-8 TPBs they are going to be hooked, AND caught up – something impossible with the original series. Read it, and let your kids read it. It teaches social lessons, and makes your children feel uncool and unable to achieve their Ultimate goals of Superhood. -Peblee |
