Ultimate Secret #4

Ultimate Secret (Warren Ellis the Great, and Tom Raney the Skinny-Head-Drawing-Artiste) has come to an end. In this, the final issue, Captain Mahr Vehl and various (now fired or suspected dead) members of the Ultimates defeated the Kree in a story that actually made the painful memory of the last two issues melt away until I found myself thinking that this was actually a pretty good series. Actually, since this book comes out bi-eonly the memory of the previous two issues had already gone the way of 1602: The New World. But I digress.

The important thing to recall from this series is that it establishes Sue Storm as the coolest Ultimate character ever. It makes Hawkeye’s passing a bit easier to swallow, and you get a glimpse of a more entwined Universe from simple comments made between normally unassociated characters. If you think that is too much of an in depth analysis of this book you are right on the money. It is called Ultimate Secret, yet it is just a miniature battle with an alien race. There is really no overarching themes, diabolical betrayals, or anything to have lasting effects throughout the Ultimate U, so why make it seem so sinister? Well, capitalism, that’s why, sucker. This book was billed as is in order to introduce Ultimate Captain Marvel, and to sell a half-cock story, which was already told in Ultimates – just with a different set of heroes and aliens. And, it wasn’t near as cool as the Ultimates’ version because the Hulk never ate anybody in this one. Hulk HUNGRY!
