Shanna The She-Devil #4 |
Well, here at last is finite and concrete proof that Frank Cho is cooler than you (and me). Shanna the She-Devil is a Lost World-ish comic about everyone’s favorite buxom dino slayer. Shanna is back and action, and this time she is drawn and written by Frank Cho. This alone is quite a feat, but it is much more impressive that Cho did both and did them so well. Let me fill you in on what’s happened so far. A team of army types gets stranded on an island where some Nazi scientists were recently still carrying out some experiments. In some large, fluid filled chambers (heh) they found several floating women, apparently the subject of some experiment or other. Shanna was the only one that was still alive, and it seemed like she wouldn’t be for long. Luckily, they saved her because the island is infested with dinosaurs, and Shanna is the only one that can stand a chance against them at close range. What first strikes me every time is how curvy Shanna is. She’s not your typical size-zero heroine, but more of a throwback to the era in which Shanna was created, a softer, rounder, more ass-kicking kinda gal. The artwork is great. Simplistic backgrounds leave all the focus on masterfully detailed characters and dinosaurs, and the coloring by Jason Keith is a vibrant watercolor affair with painstakingly precise shading. With its voluptuous main lady and its well-written, exciting, sometimes gory, often hilarious story, Shanna is a mini series well worth picking up. In fact, with such an amazing revival of such a popular character, I am surprised and saddened that Marvel Knights is not going to make this an ongoing series. So get Shanna, and if you can quit starring long enough to read it, you’ll like it on two levels, or maybe I should say three. -Fumanchu |
