Shadow Play #2

I am not sure if I reviewed the first issue of this book, but I remember reading it vividly. In it were some of the strangest and most oddly appealing scenes that I have ever found in a comic book. Both Templesmith and Wood are at their best. Wood is at his darkest, and Templesmith at his scariest.

Templesmith’s tale is one of a very young boy who becomes a vampire while witnessing some terrible juju. He then discovers that the collective of night beings around him are working for a devilish fiend who has them collect for him. What do they collect, daddy? Well, Billy, they collect very young children because it is only their blood that can keep him alive.

Wood’s tale is a sexual one, involving lobotomies, suction devices, and sultry legs reaching the maximum length possible for a comic book page. There is nudity, vampirism, and plenty of frightful betrayal. All of this is presented through the unbeatable artwork of Ashley Wood. The only complaint that I have on this score is that in the second issue the art is sometimes so unknowable that the story becomes muddled and confused. That is a bit of a problem, but one to be excused by the massively invigorating performance of the overall product.

My recommendation: if you are single buy it and read it, and maybe scan some pages and hang them up around the house. If you are married, buy it and read it in the latrine. Scan some pictures and hang them up in your secret shack of beer making and pinup posting – you cad!
