Season of the Witch #1 |
Every now and then I pick up a book that I am certain to despise, and perhaps even loath, yet when I sit down to peruse its often overly worded pages filled with artwork by artists trying to mimic some style that their talent cannot match (rather than just drawing in some distinct style that could be known as their own) I find that the pages are not too wordy, and hey, the artist seems comfortable in their work. Then there is the story. It often involves magic, demons, vampires, a chosen one, parallel worlds, and boobs. This book actually does have all of these things (except for the demons and vampires), and yet they are placed into the plot of the book so well that they aren’t obnoxious or pathetic or simpleton. How is this possible? Well, I don’t know. I just review the darned things, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Jai Nitz has got it figured out. In Season of the Witch, Nitz places his lead character first, in an unhappy home; and second, in a parallel world that actually has some history: it is the land that Alice followed the March Hare into, and the land that Dorothy traveled to. As a sucker for the spawn of Lewis Caroll, I could care less about Dorothy, but when it comes to the land of the Cheshire Cat, and the Mad Hatter, I’m all ears. And, Nitz delivered a halfway decent tale, which left me not exactly wanting more, but at least pleasantly surprised. This is a book that the despondent should check out. Then again, if you are reading this you are probably despondent, so how about I give it a recommendation for all of those who are really, really, down and completely out of faith in Fantasy comics? Still all of you, huh? Well, just check it ou -Peblee |
