As the best spoof of modern superhero comics, Powers is funny, and genuinely clever. But, as a mystery laden cop drama it is even smarter. This is a comic that lacks what it deserves: much more attention.

Bendis gets all manner of praise and plaudits for his writing of books like Ultimate Spider-Man and New Avengers. While these books are not bad (I don’t like Ult. Spidey) they are complete tripe when compared to Powers. While I realize that there is a much more massive audience for Spider-Man and the Avengers (esp. with the addition to “the worlds mightiest heroes” of Spider-Man and Wolverine), but come on people! If you enjoy reading what this man writes get to reading Powers!

This issue brings us all the naughty, dirty, little details surrounding the deaths of a fanboy Blackguard impersonator and Tyler Kimmel, “The Joke.” And, despite any bits of humor here and there, this issue is filled with difficult truths and hard to swallow answers. The end of the issue reveals what we’ve all known all along, “we all,” except you. You haven’t been reading Bendis’ truly great work, have you? Well then, I’m not gonna tell you until you do.

Putting all that aside, you should find it at least tickling to read the names “Blackguard” and “The Joke.”

Anyway, Bendis is at his best here, and unless you are an art snob who only likes Michael Turner drawing every chick to look like those twins from Full House, then you will love Oeming’s art. This is one of the best comics, ever. You should be loving on it monthly.
