New Avengers #7

New Avengers is not my favorite comic. With its mainstream flavor and often overemphasis on bad humor, it is ever getting on my nerves, yet I read on.

Why do I buy this book? Well, for one thing Bendis is writing it, and that in and of itself makes the book better than the vast majority of comics out swimming the big-boob, bad-joke current of the mainstream. And, here and now let me say that I dislike the fact that all the characters look like each other – it’s like one of those bad movies where Martin Lawrence or Jim Carey play most of the picture’s roles by adding facial-hair or changing hair color. But, every now and then there appears a spark of brilliance, and it is for those things that I continue to read.

Take the end of this issue for example: There is a most hilarious and unexpected encounter with The Sentry and the creator of the comic “The Sentry,” Paul Jenkins. It is this sort of abnormal stuff that keeps me coming back.
