Necromancer #1

WOOT! That is a nice cover by Greg Horn, I must say. I think it is obvious why I chose that one. Anyway, about this comic. Let it be said that this is not your run-of-the-mill magical girl comics. This leading lady’s legacy is a bit more sinister that is necessary. And for a highschooler-discovers-powers comic, the writing is far less campy than one would expect. Joshua Ortega (writer pictured with Peblee and myself below) surprised me greatly with this gruesome and guilt ridden first issue. The art style (Francis Manapul pencils) shows some of the cartoon-inspired trends of many modern, offbeat comics, but uses classic, pencil-esque shading. These work together to make some impressive cells. And let me say that the coloring by Brian Bucellato is top-notch. I won’t say that the dialogue and back story are super original, but I believe that this issue shows great potential, even if it is campy around the edges. To the diehard, classic fans, this is not a book I would recommend, but to the rest, I would advise you to give this comic a shot. I believe that it will be well worth it in the issues to come.
