Inane Discussion Fifteen:
"Finally, an inane for Deforms and Automatons"
Peblee: So what did you think about the Deforms and Billy the Kid? Fumanchu: Them deforms were a sight, hoo boy. What with their maladies and unusual appearances and such. Like watch’n a nickel show at the fair, ‘cept it cost me four dollars, dang! Peblee: Eric Powell must be a Deform himself. You see the way he kept takin up for them undesireables? Fumanchu: Well, I kinda desired the tattooed woman, but ‘sides that I have to say you’s right as rain, tarnation! Peblee: That painted lady been “Abused” by witches and such, doknow as I’d be goin near her unmentionables. Fumanchu: That’s the truth, ‘an more ‘en that, they was foreigners! I don’t take kindly ta them folk. That Billy, though, he’s an upstand’n gentlemen what wouldn’t compromise hisself unless there was something in it fer ‘em. Peblee: Ferget your dern Billy, and let’s focus on that big chocolate egg of a Golem heart. That thing would catch a prize dollar at the Farmer’s Market. They said they are goin after it, but they gotta get to Dr. Frankenstein? That is a bit off, ain’t it? Fumanchu: Let me once again allow spellchecker to edit my hick accent and say that this is probably the funniest comic I’ve read in a while, but it is definitely the cleverist. Peblee: Yeah. The art is so full of motion though that it seems like I just got off a Tilt-O-Whirl while I am reading this book. But, I guess it suits the genre…Wait, what genre? The circus Freak/Western/Horror Genre, I suppose is what I mean. Fumanchu: The old timey art was really good, but there was just too much going on sometimes and it got too confusing. There were way too many deforms for to stare at. Peblee: Well, I will definitely be picking up issue two. You? Fumanchu: Eh, I’ll purloin it. So let’s move on to Batman: Jekyll & Hyde. I always like to see Batman in the more psychological thriller vein that he was meant for, and when Jae Lee draws Batman, even semi-intelligent automatons take notice. Peblee: I couldn’t agree more. Jae Lee is one of my favorite artists, and I have always said that his dark, heavy on the ink style is perfect for Bats. I am really excited about this one. Did you see the grotesque, believable, and grotesque way he drew Two Face? Fumanchu: Actually, I’m blind, you jerk. But yes I did, I thought the Scarecrow was better, though. Sheesh that guy was creepy. Jae Lee definitely belongs to the area smack in between mainstream and horror noir comics, which happens to be Gotham’s address. Peblee: Gotham, and especially Arkham are the most appropriate places for Jae Lee’s razor and ink. You know, just thinking about the fact that he uses razors to ink his stuff puts a wicked sort of twist on the whole deal. I have to say that other than Gotham Knights, I am most happy with this take on Batman. Fumanchu: Not to downplay the story! Far from it, I am very excited about the rest of this Batman mini series. Automaton: YES, THIS COMIC ROCKS, CONSARN IT!
