Hellblazer #212

Mike Carey knows how to wrap it up. This story has an unfortunate ending in so many ways that it is dizzying. I think the last line, in which Constantine notes that he won, of course he did – he always does, right? – was such a sorry piece of exaggeration, denial, and shame. It was truly sad.

Where does the story go from here? Well, personal strife between John and Gemma is a no-brainer, and lots of happy-go-lucky demon possessions and infestations are sure to come. John is no doubt going to be wrestling with guilt galore, and Lucifer will be gloating at the outcome.

Really there is not much to say about this run. It was cool. It taught a lot about the inner workings of hell and the strange power struggles that play out there, and it was sad and tragic, with a previously unguessed ending.

Bravo to Carey. Do well in Vampirella.
