Fables #43

You know, it seems like it would be pretty hard for a comic series that is as good as Fables to uphold such a standard of greatness through 43 issues. But what is more amazing is that Fables just seems to get better and better. This recent story arc, Arabian Nights, is proof of just that. The Adversary has set his sights on the Arabian Fable worlds, and an ambassador, Sinbad, has been sent to Fabletown to arrange a union between the Arabian refugees and those already living on our mundane world. But it seems that the two cultures might have irreconcilable differences despite the brilliant and hilarious diplomatic efforts of King Cole. And even if an agreement can be made, it seems that the Arabian fables have an extremely powerful ace up their sleeve, a Djinn.

To those of you who haven’t read any Fables, this all might seem pretty silly. But I assure you that this book is neither silly (mostly) nor childish. The stories and themes are enthralling, and the writing is some of the best that comics have ever seen. Even if this stuff is not really your bag, most readers will find something to like in Fables, and a good many will love it. Hell, you don’t even have to be a comic reader to get pulled into this series. In any case, things keep getting more and more interesting for the Fables on our Earth, and I always like when writers get technical about such fantastic stuff. Fables is going nowhere but up, so you might as well hop on now.
