Doomed #1

You know, for the past six months or so, I have been trying to buy up some old Warren Mags. I have been particularly focusing on Eerie for no other reason than I like the Eerie covers better than Creepy, 1994, or Vampirella. I love the Frazetta, Wrightson, Adams, and all the rest. Why the hell am I telling you this in a review of a most modern book? I am telling you because Doomed is exactly what Eerie sought to be.

This is a horror magazine with wit, excellent stories, mystery, and surreal plotlines – all of which end rather abruptly and without the use of Deus Ex Machina. The artwork – black and white on a sort of thick newspaper stock paper – is a perfect match with the pulps of yore. There are, as a rule a multiplicity of talents and directions, but all are entertaining and satisfy that mannish brute of a desire for pulps. One of my all time favorite artist, Ashley Wood did the cover, the intro, and the initial story in this book which made it even better in my crust matted eyes.

I hope that this book really takes off and gets the credit that is its due. My only worry is that the 6.95 cover price may be a bit steep for the unconvinced. Regardless this bi-weekly offering from IDW will be at the top of my list for as long as it remains true to form. And, let me lastly say that its debut went beyond my hopes and dreams into that bloody greasy world that is so near the forbidden, and so far from the main stream.

By the way, Simone Bianchi (Shining Knight) would be a wicked addition to this book, as would Nick Stakal (Containment). Who will be in the next issue? Wait and see, two whole months! This is real life terror.
