Batman: Gotham County Line #3

This is the end to one of the most gruesome and bizarre Batman story I have read in a long time. Bare with me now, but a twisted serial killer by the name of Radmuller, furious with the unfairness that Batman saves some while others die, has somehow created a trans-dimension place where the people that Batman couldn’t save rise from the dead to extract their revenge. In a way, it is a truly interesting take on confronting ones demons, and even stranger is the fact that Radmuller unintentionally left the key for Batman to defeat the trap within the trap itself. So Batman, with the help of Deadman and The Phantom Stranger find the secret that turns the trap against Radmuller. (Though he will never know because he wasn’t actually there).

The artwork (by Scott Hampton) is a bizarre mix of brilliant and deeply dark frames with the occasional rushed and simplistic frame thrown in for fun. The dialogue and story (by Steve Niles) are both really good, but something has really been bothering me. The only way that Radmuller could have used the people Batman couldn’t save against him is if they were really eating him up from the inside, and yet Batman does not confront and beat that. Instead he forces Radmuller to confront his own insanity, thus destroying the crazy, magical world Batman is stuck in. So where is the closure? But I guess the problem with Batman is that he never defeats his demons, just beats them up so that they can come back and wreak havoc again and again, just like all his villains.
