Astonishing X-Men #11 |
This book continues to score with me. Yeah, I know that doesn’t sound hot, but you have to read on to understand. First off, congrats to John Cassaday for winning the 2005 Eisner Award for Best Penciler/Inker. The art in this title is always excellent, even if Kirstie Alley shows up from time to time. But, as long as we’re on the subject of artwork, let me say this. This cover makes me wonder about fame. I mean, honestly, remember when Cuba Gooding Jr. won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor? After that there were at least five, if not ten, ears of piss-poor acting by this Academy Award Winner. Now look, Cassaday: Just because you win an Eisner, you cannot start drawing the most obnoxious covers in the world. Look at this cover it is he loudest cover I think I have seen since the early days of Image! But, but, but the story is pretty good, and features one of the most kickass moves Charles Xavier has ever performed. And it also has the greatest, coolest, and scariest Sentinels that I have ever seen. These things add up, you see? So now we have a really great comic with a really awful cover. Again, the lesson for the week is: Don’t judge a book by its cover, and don’t not buy a book just because of a sucky cover.* *See the last bunch of Batman issues. I’ll pick my favorite for the link, but that doesn’t mean the rest are better. -Peblee |
