Conan and the Jewels of Gwahlur #1

A great plot, and a generally great story, Jewels of Gwahlur is a pretty fun read with a few, not too many, but a few really great lines.

The story itself is over wordy, which, in my opinion is inappropriate to the idea of Conan where action should take president. Also, I couldn’t help but to notice that there are about five million pictures of Conan’s profile, wearing a horned helm, his arms crossed. It gets extremely old.

The art in this feature is pretty good, though one used to Cary Nord will find it lacking. It does however pull Conan into that 70’s style which is probably the most remembered. It is strange, but this sort of thing may be on a rise in popularity.

Not many read it, but there was a TPB called House on the Borderland based on a turn of the century novel of the same name. Though it came out in 2003, the art is reminiscent of the cartoon The Hobbit. In an almost identical art style, a book came out just this year entitled Big Foot, which was very good, and a recommendation for those seeking something way outside the realm of normal comicdom. Then, of course, there is the Legion of Super-Heroes, with its throw-back artistic nod to its predecessors. Here again, with Conan and the Jewels of Gwahlur, we see a similar nod.

I will say that this book has the potential for action, fun, and maybe greatness. The dialogue alone has enough hilarious tidbits to bring me back to the second issue.
